GoldenDict for openSUSE 12.1?

Postby ctcx » Sun Dec 04, 2011 4:10 am

I have Win 7 and Linux openSUSE 12.1 in my PC, and I'd like to try GoldenDict on Linux. But checking out the repositories here:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositori ... oldendict/
I noticed the openSUSE_12.1/ directory is still empty, while the other openSUSE directories do have their corresponding packages. Factory is seemingly being updated more frequently even when the most recent stable version of openSUSE is 12.1.

Do you think there will be packages for 12.1? I'd be a bit easier to install from repository than from source (even GD main page mentions it). Guess trying to install from Factory repo wouldn't work... Or do I really have a better bet by installing it from source?
Thanks.

Installing from the source is no real problem under Linux, just do it. Besides, the packaged build is normally quite behind the latest development.

So which should I install? The current stable version 1.0.1 or the latest development version? Are there stability issues?

I use the latest development version and have no issue with stability.

After some repository exploring, I realized one of openSUSE's default repos does ship a version of Goldendict 1.0.1. It's complete rpm version is 1.0.1-3.1.2.
Later I found another good repo that ships 1.0.1-12.1.
Finally Goldendict's repo which I mentioned in first post normally ships 1.0.1-17.1 or a bit higher, at least for the other openSUSE versions.

I heard the numbers 3.1.2, 12.1, 17.1, are just the number of times the package has been built and could or could not include some updates. So, would I be OK with 3.1.2 or should I really pick 12.1? I'd like to try repo way before having to get involved with the source way.

It's generally good to use the latest built available, as it may include some minor fixes.
