feature request

Postby seadeer » Mon Apr 11, 2011 7:08 pm

Hi,
First of all, I want to say thank you to the developers of GoldenDict for this awesome software. The interface is clean and simple, and the functionality is great.

I was wondering if the following feature could be implemented: making custom user dictionaries that could be edited directly in the program, as opposed to compiling the dictionary from a source first and then loading it. This feature was implemented in Lingvo, and I've been extensively using it. I have several custom Lingvo glossaries in the .lud format that I used all the time in Lingvo under Windows, but now I migrated back to Linux, and discovered that I can would need to compile the .lud files in Lingvo (which is by now gone), and then my glossaries wouldn't be editable anymore.

For technical translators, no dictionary has all the current (or old) terminology they need, so we have to make lists of terms all the time. I imagine this feature could be very useful.

There is no big need in this kind of feature, IMHO. As Lingvo user, you probably know their DSL format. DSL dictionaries can be used in GD, edited with any text editor, and any modifications can be applied virtually immediately via Edit → Dictionaries → Rescan now.

But isn't this convoluted? To do this, you have to first hack into their proprietary .lsd file. Does this make sense, in order to input your own data on the program that operates under the GNU license?

You don’t have to hack anything. Just create your own DSL dictionary and make it available to GD.

@dg333: you are right. Thank you for the suggestions. I pretty much followed your recommendations, converted my custom-made dictionary into .dsl and I see that it is easy enough to edit (not harder than Linguist's Toolbox really). I looked into it more and saw that, unlike .lsd, the .dsl format is indeed not a proprietary format, it is just text with tags. I take back my comment about hacking .

it is just text with tags

For GD, you don’t even have to care about tags (unless you want your dictionary look really glamorous :).

GD is no doubt a great program.I want some features as follows.

1. Anagram functionality like one in " The Sage"
2. Wildcard search like one in "The Sage"
3. Word list , to prepare word list for later viewing.
4. Text to speach feature such that if we click on the transcription it should speak it (like in "The Sage")

The sage is free utility available here http://www.sequencepublishing.com/thesage.html

Enhancing dictionaries

Postby monachus » Fri Jun 03, 2011 11:21 am

Hello,

I do not believe, that the wish to add words to dictionaries is too seldom.
But there is not a real workflow available to get it done smoothly. Using open-source dictionaries and finding gaps (and filling them by other research) I would like to add this knowledge just to not get into the same trouble the next time again - my memory is not as good to avoid this :(

If you are interested to integrate it, I would like to actively help creating such a workflow. Please contact me.

Thanks for considering this.
Jan

PS: Anyway, a big thanks for your great program.
