GPL3 and Digital Restrictions Management (DRM)

Postby Yohtoire » Wed Aug 05, 2009 7:24 pm

There is some misleading information on the GoldenDict web site.
The misleading statement is:
there are laws preventing to break copyright protection schemes,

A party contributing to or using GoldenDict would agree that such laws are not broken by removing the DRMs from (a copy of) GoldenDict. Please refer to the section of the GPL3 titled:
3. Protecting Users' Legal Rights From Anti-Circumvention Law.

Thank you, to the contributors of GoldenDict for it.

Yes, you're right, thanks for pointing that out. However, there's no DRM in GoldenDict right now and there probably won't be for any foreseeable future -- that writing you were referring to was a very long shot. Dictionary publishers seem to be quite a conservative crowd. If that would be really necessary, we might consider changing the license for GPLv2 only -- GPLv3 does seem to go too far beyond expectations.
