Scan popup for RTL (right to left) languages

Postby nit_ar » Sat Nov 07, 2009 7:03 am

Hello Goldendict Support,

Thanks for this very useful application.

I am using Goldendict mainly English to Hebrew translations but also for Hebrew to English translations.

The Hebrew to English translation works fine when I am typing the Hebrew word in the "Look up" box, but when I am using "Scan popup" on Hebrew web pages (both in firefox and IE), the scanned word is captured with swapped letters (as the word has been read from "left to right" instead as from "right to left".

Is it possible to fix this problem somehow ?

Thanks

using version 0.9.0 I got the same here, although I get additional letters in both the look up and the popup. it also happens in translating from hebrew to hebrew. I must mention that the bug occurs only when translating one word translation. for two or more words translation it works fine.
example:

שלום
well being, health2íìùK

ùìåîéí (>>ùéìåîéí)
reparations, remuneration, payments1íìùK

שלום
Shalom (family name)2íìùG

______________
instead of:

שלום
well being, health

ùìåîéí (>>ùéìåîéí) <------ this line is encoded unproperly
reparations, remuneration, payments

שלום
Shalom (family name)
__________
two or more words translation:

שלום-עולם
everlasting peace
____
or:

עשה שלום
made peace

I suffer this bug too. I can think of two possible solutions:
  • Use metadata of the glossary file to detect target language direction (does that piece of metadata even exist?!)
  • Keep a list of RTL languages internally, and detect target language using glossary's metadata
If you need help in implementing it, discuss your ideas here, and give me some info. I have almost no clue where and how in the source this bug should be fixed.

I could fix that for some Arabic dictionary using this article-style.css put in ~/.goldendict/:
Code: Select all
:lang(ar)
{
    text-align: right;
    text-direction: rtl;
}

This should be default for Arabic (ar), Persian (fa), Hebrew (he), etc.

BTW this trick worked for none of my English-to-Persian dictionaries! Isn't code of Persian language "fa"? Its ISO code is "fa".
