It occurred to me that I could just run Goldendict in the terminal to see what was going on. After seeing it stumble over everything as an "alt headword," I realized that I hadn't left a space before each line of text in the body. So that was it. Initialization went well after that. Thanks.

Just to confirm that each line of the body of an article in DSL format needs to start with a whitespace character (space or tab).
