LD2 files

Postby lzj » Wed Dec 23, 2009 9:58 pm

I have a favorite dictionary in LD2 file, and I really want to use it with GoldenDict. It's great to be able to use StarDic already, but if you can support LD2 file, it'll be really great : I'll be able to use one tool for everything.

Examples and format of this format can be found here :
http://www.lingoes.net/

Specs :
http://www.lingoes.net/en/translator/localization.htm

Here is my favorite Dic, I bought the original one, but it's really hard to use, so I prefered the Lingoes when I was still on Windows. Now there is no simple way to use Lingoes on Ubuntu, so I NEED an alternative. Since I bought it already, I don't think it't illegal, the original one is really stupid  .

Thank you very much. :D

I don't think that LD2 format is open and documented anywhere. If I remember correctly, the author keeps the knowledge to himself and offers to convert from other formats to LD2, but no official converters or specifications for LD2 itself. Which is a real shame, since there are plenty of interesting dictionaries in LD2 format...

This seems the format specs, but the creator is not yet done:

These are the specs for input format. Then the author converts the input dictionary from that format to the LD2 format via his proprietary "creator" tool. And LD2 is an unpublished format and it is not yet known how to parse it by anybody except by the author of Lingoes.

This is pretty annoying situation and author doesn't really respond to any questions about the format, only promises to release some info/tools sometime in the future, but these promises are years old and nothing changes. So, personally, I abandoned Lingoes altogether and using dictionaries in Lingvo (DSL) format, and by last count there were more dictionaries in open DSL format than in proprietary LD2 format.

it's a pity... that also Lingoes is not available on Ubuntu, even any Linux distributions.

The thread seems to be dated but the problem is not, I spent quite a while trying to decipher ldx/ld2 files (not that they are much different, only one byte is different) and finally gave up, Kevin uses his own format and will probably never release the tool to convert it but I have found out that the dictionaries form his website are usually converted from different places,

my favourite vicon series can be found in Babylon BGL format
http://www.babylon.com/free-dictionarie ... /1253.html
http://www.babylon.com/free-dictionarie ... /2522.html

the BGL format is also proprietary, but it's been reverse-engineered:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1044452

there is a longer way as well for advanced users(http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/stardict/wiki/Babylon)

Hope this helps

The french dictionary (Le Nouveau Petit Robert de la langue française 2007) is also to be found in a different format(I spotted mdx somewhere but it was a russian site so I gave up), it's out there

Folks, please refrain from posting links for various cracking tools. I modified the posts to remove such links.

P.S. Btw, GoldenDict should support BGL natively.

The mobile version of GoldenDict supports LD2 dictionaries.
Because GoldenDict developer respects the desire of Lingoes developer of keeping ld2 files closed, he wont add ld2 support to the open-source desktop version.

At least what would be great is to have a closed-source application, free or not, that can convert ld2 files to dsl, and create ld2 files from bgl and dsl source...

Have been waiting for this for years. Please consider it
