Public, free thesaurus for GoldenDict

Hi guys (and gals),

It seems that GoldenDict needs at least one publicly available and free from any copyright issues English Thesaurus. There is already a good dictionary available (Wordnet 3.0 based), but we need a thesaurus as well!

Looks like there is such free thesaurus after all: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moby_Project#Thesaurus

And it is pretty extensive too. Do you think it worth an effort to create a GoldenDict dictionary out of it and host it on goldendict site, alongside the Wordnet dictionary? I see that there is an En-Ru-En package readily available for GD users. Maybe we need to create En-En package (with the dictionary and thesaurus) so that many more users could try out GoldenDict with some good dictionaries out of the box?

It's using Flash to render those graphics. In GD, go to Preferences > Network and check "Enable web plugins". Finally, be sure you have Flash installed in your system.
I have added Lexipedia as "http://www.lexipedia.com/english/%GDWORD%" and it works.

I agree. GoldenDict needs to include some good dictionaries with a public license out of the box. This is even more important for the Android platform where you can find more casual users and is more difficult for the non-tech-savvy to find and install dictionaries. This in an important barrier for such users IMHO.

If it's not possible to include such dictionaries for some legal reason, then, at least, provide some links or download mechanism inside the app to install them without the hassle of connecting the cellphone to the computer, downloading the dictionaries and copying them to the memory card.

I am sorry to bring up this old topic but it's the first occurence on google when searching for Goldendict Thesaurus.

It seems that a package exists on debian/ubuntu for the Moby Thesaurus :
Debian package information : https://packages.debian.org/sid/text/di ... -thesaurus
Ubuntu package information : http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/dict-moby-thesaurus

Also a simple
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install dict-moby-thesaurus
will bring this amazing database available in Goldendict.
