Actual Human English Voice Packages !!!

Postby lynn2tun » Sat Dec 15, 2012 9:00 am

Hi! Everyone

For GD, you can download Actual English Voice Packages from Lingoes Official Website. All are in MP3 formats. No more worries for ________.dsl.files.zip for Sounds. These are actual human voices recorded by native speakers of English (British and American), not Text To Speech Engines (TTE) which aren't reliable.

from here,
http://www.lingoes.net/en/translator/speech.htm

Lingoes Basic English Voice Package (10,386 words - 24.1 MB)
Longman Modern English 2005 Updated American (A-Z) (40,339 words - 99 MB)
Longman Modern English 2005 Updated British (A-Z) (43,913 words - 130 MB)
Webster Voice Package (A-Z) (141,728 words - 372 MB)

To activate sounds in GD  Go to Edit=>Preferences=>Audio and tick Play via DirectShow

FYI
The Link for Webster Voice Package is dead but it's googlable. Enjoy.

Kind Regards,

LYNN

Last GD builds for Windows can play sounds via Bass library. If you work under Windows, just take Bass from it official site, place bass.dll beside goldendict.exe and select in preferences "Play via Bass library". It is most reliable method.

Thank You, Abs62. But I don't know about BASS exactly. Does this program pronounce English words by using TTS or Human-Recorded Voices? How many English words can it support? Off-line or On-line? British or American, or Both?

Waiting for your kind reply,

Bass is not TTS program, it is just sound playback engine. Just it play sound files more reliably then windows native API in GD or Qt phonon plugin (DirectShow in preferences).

Maybe worth noting: Take bass.dll from the Bass for the Win32 platform (not for Win64), even if your Windows is 64-bit.

Thanks. So, I see this program functions like TTS engine. But, in my humble opinion, it's not as reliable as Human English Voice, isn't it?
Webster Voice Package & Longman Voice Package have sounds even for Proper Names and Place names in correct accent. For instance,
If you type hallelujah, they can pronounce /ˌhæləˈlujə/ in American Accent and /ˌhælɪˈluːjə/ in British Accent correctly. TTS can't. The most reliable sounds recorded by native speakers from well-known authorities. Actually I downloaded BASS as you recommended, but I don't know how to install it tho' I saw .exe files. I could'nt install them. It didn't run. Please enlighten me. I'm not an expert in IT field.

Kind Regards,

No. It's not TTL engine, it's just player. It plays sound files like .wav or .mp3.

Just put file bass.dll into GoldenDict folder. After this option "Play via Bass library" in preferences will be enabled to choose.

I did it ( I put bass.dll file next to goldendict.exe). But I couldn't install .exe file. It didn't display correctly and didn't run like a normal installation file. One more problem, in my GD's config, Play via BASS Library is dim and can't be activated.
Thanks

Bass haven't installation file. It is a library, not a separate program. You must just unzip archive and take from it bass.dll file.

Did you use 32-bit bass.dll? Did you restart GD after this?
