How to use transliteration

Hi, I just installed GoldenDict and I found it really nice.
I didn't understand how transliteration works though. I installed a couple of english->japanese dictionaries bu they use japanese characters. Is there a way to translate directly from english to romanized japanese through the transliteration function?
